U-M ELI - XR Research

Summer 2021 - Fall 2022 // Assistant XR Materials Developer

I interned part-time at the University of Michigan English Language Institute (ELI) to create three immersive, engaging, and interactive Extended Reality (XR) experiences for international students. These experiences are designed to give students opportunities to practice academic communication skills by replicating “real-world” scenarios.

XR Experience #1: “Finding Your Way”

This ~10min experience is designed to help students navigate a university building, ask for directions, and speak to a professor with three distinct dialogue paths.

A full playthrough of “Finding Your Way” using the Uptale software. Played and recorded on a PC.

A summary of the production of “Finding Your Way,” from conceptualization to gathering student feedback.

XR Experience #2: “Michigan Union Ticket Office”

A collaboration with the staff of the Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO), designed to inform students on how to order tickets to local performances.

A full playthrough of “Michigan Union Ticket Office” using the Uptale software. Played and recorded on a PC.

An alternate version of the experience, “condensed” into a 360° YouTube video (an actor plays the “student” role).

XR Experience #3: Counseling and Psychological Services”

A collaboration with staff at U-M Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), designed to show students the resources that CAPS offers in-person and online.

One of the scenes from “Counseling and Psychological Services,” showcasing a CAPS individual therapy setting.

Another scene from “Counseling and Psychological Services,” showcasing the CAPS Wellness Zone.
